We made the decision to expand our portfolio earlier this year. Our programmes in Africa and India had a fantastic 2008 – we sent heaps of students and placements participants out to Work the World houses in Tanzania, Ghana, India and Zanzibar and recieved a record number of glowing reports about our service, the houses and the clinical placements.  Word started to get round and we had so much interest in Tanzania we were able to open up a whole new programme in Lake Victoria . Although close to Arusha, our original programme, Mwanza in Lake Victoria is off the beaten track and is home to one of the countries biggest referral hospitals, so the placements we can offer are really different to Arusha’s offerings. We only opened the doors about six weeks ago, but feedback is amazing and we are booking up fast!

With the success of Lake Victoria, we thought it was time to spread our wings a little further. Nepal and Argentina offer two dramatically different destination options – both from each other and our other programmes.  Chitwan, our base in Nepal, is home to endangered tigers and rhino, so there is excellent wildlife spotting. It also gives you access to the highest mountain ranges in the world and some truly fabulous trekking, rafting and biking opportunities.  On the other hand, Mendoza in Argentina is a land of fine wines, the best steak in the world, seductive tango and the amazing travel potential of South America. We started a discussion in the office about which we would choose if we had to go right now ….. we’re still umming and ahhing!

Work the World put an enormous amount of work into preparation of a programme to make sure we have the right staff, structured placements and safe Work the World houses. We are still in the process of building partnerships with hospitals and clinics in both destinations, so there is no information on the exact placements in Nepal or Argentina at present. January 2010 will see the official launch of the Nepal programme, followed by Argentina in May. Do get in touch if you are interested in either as we can incorporate your clinical interests into our talks with the hospitals.
