Watch your diet – You’ve heard it before – a good diet will do wonders for you. What you might not have realised is the effect of food on your teeth.  High fibre foods not only stimulate saliva (which fights bacteria) it gives your teeth a good scrubbing as you chew. Tofu, leafy greens, beans, whole grains and poultry contain vitamins A, C and D and along with dairy products, plenty of  calcium.

  2. Drink water – rinsing your teeth is really important as it washes away all the foods and sugary drinks that are left in the mouth.
  3. Enjoy a cup of tea – Green and black tea contain polyphenols that interact with the bacteria that causes plaque. They either kill or supress bacteria which prevents them from growing or producing attacking acids.
  4. Snack on nuts – they have so many vitamins and minerals in they make perfect snacks for healthy mouths.
  5. Avoid fizzy drinks and juices - Some bottles of pop contain as much sugar as a king – sized chocolate bar. Even diet drinks, despite being sweetened, contain tooth-eroding acids. And fruit juices…. if you think about the fact lemon juice is as a cleaning or bleaching agent, you get a good idea of what could be going on with your teeth! If you can’t avoid them, use a straw.

Preparar el paciente para la operación……….ummmm……que???

Thursday, March 31st, 2011

Now at first glance you may think “it’s another language, I don’t get it”, but have another look……. it’s not that hard to pick out words, and with just a little bit of initiative most of us would understand that “Preparar el paciente para la operación” simply means “prepare the patient for the operation”. And you thought you couldn’t speak the language!

Ghana Dental Outreach Project 2010

Some of the kids

This year’s Dental Outreach Programme in Ghana took place in Jacobu within the Ashanti region of Ghana. It was about an hour’s drive south of Kumasi, which is the second largest city in Ghana and famous for its markets. The project spanned 3 weeks and consisted of seven 4th year dental students as well as (and for the first time ever for us) 5 dental hygienists. All the participants were studying or had finished studying at Cork and were therefore full of Irish vigour and energy!

The project was designed to provide free screenings and treatments to the school children of the local area. We had a bus and each day it would take us to the schools where the screenings were carried out and then bring those children that had been referred to the local St Peters Hospital for treatment. The screening process was immense! Just short of 4,500 children were screened during the project. We were privileged to have the dental hygienists during the screening process, they worked to provide education (of course with translators!) to all of those children that were screened by the dental students. This will enable the good work that took place to carry on after we left so that the children understand the importance of effective oral cleaning.

The winner of the dental outreach competition is announced!

Monday, February 15th, 2010

Work the World dental outreach team 2009 found that 76% of children in rural Kerala need dental treatment.  As part of our commitement to providing excellent student placements that also benefit the local communities in which they are based, Work the World are planning two dental outreach projects in the summer of 2010.

We ran a competition at the end of last year to offer one lucky student the opportunity to come with us to a rural village in Kerala and join the dental outreach team. I am absolutely thrilled to let you all know that Fiona Corcoran was our winner – her video of why she would love to join the team was by far and away the most inspiring.

Omar commented “It was great to see so much enthusiasm and creativity in Fiona’s short film. She’s obviously passionate about dental care and is going to be the perfect person to join the other students in July.”

Arusha

Friday, January 29th, 2010

As promised – the update on Arusha and it’s hospitals is finally here! I’m afraid it’s a little later than intended, but such is the problem of these “inspirational trips” to Africa….. they inspire so much in every area we’ve all been flat out working on new projects!

But back to Arusha…

Freddy took us on the orientation tour that he usually gives to the students, giving us the low down on the city centre, where to find what you want to buy and how to work out which of a million dala dalas would drop you “under the tree” next to the Work the World house in Themi Hill (it’s the ones with the black stripe on the side!).

It was also a good opportunity to ask the students their top tips for tours, restaurants, bars and other favourite places. Here are a few of the things they came back with

Abby and Omar head to the World Dental Congress

Wednesday, August 19th, 2009

Last week Omar and I were invited to attend the 56th IADS and YDW Annual World Dental Congress in Romania – the land of Dracula and the Cheeky Girls!

We were greeted at the airport by Ioana and Ciprian our team leaders and were taken back to the hotel to meet everyone and rest up before the Official Opening Ceremony.  During the ceremony we were treated to a Thriller-esque intro to the IADS committee plus a virtual tour around the new dental clinic at the university.  It was immediately obvious that we were amongst a wonderful group of friends as the students here attend these events every year.

The next morning I was very kindly given the opportunity to present our new outreach projects to the committee.  They were enthusiastically received and many students can’t wait to get involved next summer. We also took part in an international exchange fair where we met the wonderful Prof. Dr. Holger Jetsch from the University of Leipzig, Germany who was also talking.  The General Assembly and also the NEO- meeting of IADS, in fact all of it was such a success.

Work experience opportunities for graduating healthcare students

Friday, August 7th, 2009

Competition for jobs is reaching an all-time high, something that 2009′s graduating healthcare students are well aware of. Whereas students of 2007 or 2008 may have donned a backpack and travelled for a while to chill out after their studies, the graduating students of 2009 fear that a job may not be forthcoming on their return and are doing their best to secure one of the limited vacancies available asap.

The government have recognised that the situation for graduating students is a bit dire and have set up supported internships and various bursary schemes to help out. They are also keen to communicate one of their key messages – that students can use this opportunity to gain work experience and help themselves. This is a great recommendation because it’s absolutely true! Work experience can not only help you decide exactly what your interests are and add to your skills profile, it can also really add depth to your CV. Relevant and interesting work experience show that students are committed, and also have some understanding of their profession.
