Tanzania: A Medical Elective by Ben Casey

Thursday, June 16th, 2011

For my elective I decided to travel to Tanzania. It is a country I’ve visited before as a tourist and I loved it so much I wanted to go back and see it from another perspective. I arranged a placement with Work the World as they promised to take all of the hassle out of arranging it. It paid off.

Mount Meru Regional Hospital 150x150 Tanzania: A Medical Elective by Ben Casey

Mount Meru Regional Hospital

My elective was based at Mount Meru Regional Hospital in Arusha. The hospital has some 450 in-patient beds (although this might better represent the number of patients rather than actual beds as described later) and sees 600 out-patients daily. It serves a large population and provides a wide variety of services: A&E, obstetrics and gynaecology, TB and leprosy wards, general surgery including orthopaedics, psychiatry, and physiotherapy among some other departments. It was and is a very busy hospital and is staffed by very few doctors who are assisted by over 180 nurses.

Sunil was the first to come back with the lowdown on the two Nepal students – Sundeap said that “at home we would normally just hang out with friends, but in Nepal we always make set plans. Sometimes it works sometimes it doesn’t and so we just go with the flow!”. Rosie added that “the most exciting trip so far was our trip to the peace pagoda on the other side of the lake. It was amazing, but we didn’t realise how long we had been there. At 7pm all the boats back to Pokhara had left and we got stranded. In the end we had to swim across……… ha ha, not really…… Sundeap shouted enough for a boat to eventually come and get us back to the right side of the lake.”.

As promised – the update on Arusha and it’s hospitals is finally here! I’m afraid it’s a little later than intended, but such is the problem of these “inspirational trips” to Africa….. they inspire so much in every area we’ve all been flat out working on new projects!

But back to Arusha…

Police Mess - Orientation lunch

Freddy took us on the orientation tour that he usually gives to the students, giving us the low down on the city centre, where to find what you want to buy and how to work out which of a million dala dalas would drop you “under the tree” next to the Work the World house in Themi Hill (it’s the ones with the black stripe on the side!).
