The Weekly Question – What has been your clinical highlight this week?

Friday, September 2nd, 2011

Often students tell us of rare and tropical diseases that they’ve only read about in the past. Whether it be differences in the treatment of patients, unseen diseases or progressed pathologies, an overseas placement can provide a fascinating learning environment. We have asked this question a few times but we always get some really interesting answers… What has been your clinical highlight this week?

On the ward in Sri Lanka

In Sri Lanka after three weeks on the surgical ward Julie’s really built up the trust between herself and her local colleagues “I’m treated as a team member.  I had my own patients for wound care management and contributed to a burns victim dressing. This was a new approach, which had a good effect on the staff and patient as dressing time became less dramatic.”

Watch your diet – You’ve heard it before – a good diet will do wonders for you. What you might not have realised is the effect of food on your teeth.  High fibre foods not only stimulate saliva (which fights bacteria) it gives your teeth a good scrubbing as you chew. Tofu, leafy greens, beans, whole grains and poultry contain vitamins A, C and D and along with dairy products, plenty of  calcium.

  2. Drink water – rinsing your teeth is really important as it washes away all the foods and sugary drinks that are left in the mouth.
  3. Enjoy a cup of tea – Green and black tea contain polyphenols that interact with the bacteria that causes plaque. They either kill or supress bacteria which prevents them from growing or producing attacking acids.
  4. Snack on nuts – they have so many vitamins and minerals in they make perfect snacks for healthy mouths.
  5. Avoid fizzy drinks and juices - Some bottles of pop contain as much sugar as a king – sized chocolate bar. Even diet drinks, despite being sweetened, contain tooth-eroding acids. And fruit juices…. if you think about the fact lemon juice is as a cleaning or bleaching agent, you get a good idea of what could be going on with your teeth! If you can’t avoid them, use a straw.

Dental Outreach in Zanzibar is growing by 300% in 2010

Thursday, March 11th, 2010

The Dental Outreach Project taking place on Zanzibar this summer is shaping up to be quite an event. Following the great success of the team in Zanzibar last year, it looks like we are going to be able to expand upon the project by over 300%. This is great news for both us and the village of Kivunge, who were our hosts last year, as it means we can provide more much-needed free dental care to the villagers, including those schoolchildren that were unable to obtain treatment last time round because of inevitable time constraints.

Screening in Kivunge

The Dental Outreach Programmes are designed to bring free assessments and treatment to villages and schools that don’t have access to dental healthcare. We started offering them in Ghana and India as a way to create a sustainable project that utilised the skills of dental placement students, whilst also providing hands-on dental experience for our elective students. Visiting rural communities we quickly realised how much dental care they need – as many as 70% of the children we screened last year needed to be referred to our free clinic for actual treatment.
