The top ten…. tips for travellers

Thursday, July 21st, 2011

Our partner Interhealth has published their top 10 tips for travellers, so we thought we’d post it here  for you as well. Check out Interhealth’s site for all the latest advice on travel medication. Any student that comes with us automatically gets access to their own Interhealth page full of advice about the destination they are travelling to.

  1. Drink lots of water. Staying hydrated makes a big difference to your energy when in a hot, tiring environment, and during a long flight. If it’s very hot at your destination, one or two drinks of oral rehydrationsolution during the day can be very reviving even if you don’t have diarrhoea. In addition to replacing fluids it puts back electrolytes and sugar.

The weekly question – what is the best mode of money to take overseas?

Monday, June 27th, 2011

One of the most common questions we still get from students in the run up to their elective is “what is the best mode of money to take overseas with me?” It used to be the case that traveller’s cheques and local currency were all you could take but times have changed and managing your money overseas is easier and safer than ever.

All of our placements are located in colourful and bustling destinations where ATMs are easily accessible. We always take you out on your first day for an extensive orientation of the local area so you know exactly where to find the banks, internet cafes and all the other travel essentials.

There is lots of information and suggestions available for each student in the downloadable info pack on My Trip, but there is nothing like getting answers firsthand from students to put the mind at ease!

So this week we asked our students overseas “What is the best mode of money to take with overseas? US dollars? travellers cheques? bank card? english money?

Preparing for your time overseas

Tuesday, April 5th, 2011

This month sees the return of the weekly question that we pose to our students overseas. It’s always fantastic to get some advice and feedback from people in-country and we understand that travelling to the other side of the world, particularly to a developing country can be quite a culture shock. This week we decided to ask “How can we better prepare you for this?”

Now at first glance you may think “it’s another language, I don’t get it”, but have another look……. it’s not that hard to pick out words, and with just a little bit of initiative most of us would understand that “Preparar el paciente para la operación” simply means “prepare the patient for the operation”. And you thought you couldn’t speak the language!

What travel essential could you not live without?

Friday, March 26th, 2010

This weeks big question for the different Work the World houses was a fun one – what one travel item in your bag is the one you cannot live without? As usual the response was varied – some fun, some really serious.

Suncream featured heavily in the essentials!

Joe reported from Ghana to say that this question had sparked a lively debate. Evelynn was the first to express her thoughts – “mosquito repellent spray…. and lots of it!”. Flora thought that for her it was sun cream. “Nowhere we have come across sells sun cream – it’s much better to bring it from home”. This was widely supported by the whole of the house until Sarah and Frances decided that ” it’s got to be Malaria tablets. Living in an enviroment where mosquitoes are everywhere, means protection against malaria is key. Without protection, your life could be over”. The mood was quite sombre so Isabel threw in her travel essential…. “food is the answer to the question. May be McDonalds?“!
