Midwifery elective placements in Ghana, West Africa

Midwifery placements in Ghana offer you an insight into a very different world. Busy hospitals with minimal resources and a labour ward where no noise is allowed.

Government regional hospital - We work with the largest government run health care institution in the Western Region, with an incredibly busy maternity ward. Placements cover everything from Delivery, Neonatal, Intensive Care, Obstetrics and Gynaecology and students can choose whether to focus their time on a particular speciality or, if you have a little longer, move between two or three different areas.

Government district hospital - The smaller, government run district hospitals are more typical of Ghanaian healthcare. Although the cases will be similar to the larger hospital, facilities are often more basic and your role will cover a wider variety of areas. A placement here gives you the opportunity to have patient interaction within a smaller maternity ward, get to know your team and become more involved in the whole patient journey.

Private maternity clinic - The word private can be misleading. The centre we work at is bustling, chaotic and an excellent opportunity to get involved in anything and everything. The clinic covers antenatal and postnatal care, deliveries, circumcisions, vaccinations, malaria and HIV testing and treatment, as well as family planning, which has a big focus in Africa at the moment.

Don't forget - if your preferred speciality is not listed, give us a call as we can usually accommodate most requests. You could also think about other opportunities to make more of your elective:

Split placements - If you are in Ghana for more than four weeks, it's a brilliant place to do a split placement. We can mix and match between two different clinical institutions so that you can get a much better picture of Ghanaian healthcare and really make the most of your elective.

Village healthcare experience - Ghana is all about the people and the vibrant, energetic culture that overflows into everything they do. To complement your city placement, we offer a fantastic opportunity to travel to a rural village where you will spend a week working in a basic, local healthcare clinic. You will live with a local family, spending your afternoons with a guide learning traditional Ghanaian customs, enjoying the hospitality and friendliness of West African people and exploring the visually stunning landscapes.
