Nursing elective placements in Ghana, West Africa

Ghana offers the chance to work with diseases that can be rare in the UK, such as malaria, typhoid and TB, as well as advanced disease and clinical signs.

Government regional hospital - We work with the largest government run health care institution in the Western Region, offering big, busy wards with excellent supervisors and the opportunity to be quite specific about your interests. Nurses in Ghana work closely with doctors and there is great camaraderie between the nursing teams. Paediatrics, Neonatal Intensive Care, Obstetrics, Gynaecology, Orthopaedics, Surgery and the Casualty Outpatients Clinic all offer some great nursing electives.

Government district hospital - We have a great relationship with the smaller, government run district hospitals that are more typical of Ghanaian healthcare. Although similar specialist placements are offered, facilities are likely to be more basic and your role will cover a wider variety of areas. Working with a smaller staff team throughout makes it easier to develop relationships with them and have more patient interaction in a range of treatment and care, as well as get more involved in the whole patient journey.

Don't forget - if your preferred speciality is not listed, give us a call as we can usually accommodate most requests. You could also think about other opportunities to make more of your elective:

Split placements - If you are in Ghana for more than four weeks, it's a brilliant place to do a split placement. We will give you time in two different clinical institutions so that you can get a much better picture of Ghanaian healthcare and really make the most of your elective.

Village healthcare experience - Ghana is all about the people and the vibrant, energetic culture that overflows into everything they do. To complement your city placement, we offer a fantastic opportunity to travel to a rural village where you will spend a week working in a basic, local healthcare clinic. You will live with a local family, spending your afternoons with a guide learning traditional Ghanaian customs, enjoying the hospitality and friendliness of West African people and exploring the visually stunning landscapes.
