Medical elective placements in Mwanza, Tanzania
Mwanza has the second largest tertiary referral hospital outside of Dar, so people travel here from all around the surrounding region. You can be quite specific about your interests and there is more opportunity to get involved in advanced treatment.
Government tertiary referral hospital - Our placements are based in the second largest tertiary referral hospital in the country, offering big, busy wards with excellent supervisors. There are placement options in General Medicine, Surgery, Obstetrics, Paediatrics, Infectious Diseases, Orthopaedics, Oncology, Intensive Care, Casualty and Outpatients, as well as opportunities for those with HIV counselling experience in regular outpatient clinics.
Government regional hospital - Regional government hospitals are more representative of the type of healthcare most Tanzanians have access too. Although similar placements are offered, facilities are likely to be more basic than at the referral hospital and proactive students will find scope to get involved in a wide range of treatments.
Don't forget - if your preferred speciality is not listed, give us a call as we can usually accommodate most requests. You could also think about other opportunities to make more of your elective:
Split placements - If you are in Tanzania for more than three weeks, it's a brilliant place to do a split placement. We will give you time in both the regional or district hospital, or in the private clinic. If you wish to travel further afield we can also arrange half your placement at our Dar es Salaam or Arusha programmes.
Village healthcare experience - To complement your city placement, we offer a fantastic opportunity to travel to a Sukuma tribe village where you will spend a week working in a small hospital that caters to the local community. Living in basic accommodation with a local family and spending afternoons with a guide learning about the Sukuma is a unique cultural experience.
