Midwifery elective placements in Mwanza, Tanzania

Mwanza has the second largest tertiary referral hospital outside of Dar, so people are referred here from all around the surrounding region.

Government tertiary referral hospital - Our placements are based in the second largest tertiary referral hospital in the country, with a busy Maternity Unit. Patients receive treatment not readily available at regional or district level, so it's a good place for students interested in more specialist treatments. Placements in Neonatal and the Intensive Care Unit are particularly recommended.

Government regional hospital -We have a great relationship with one of the biggest government hospitals in the area, which is more representative of the type of healthcare most Tanzanians have access too. Placements cover everything from Delivery, Neonatal, Obstetrics and Gynaecology and there are excellent opportunities and scope for patient interaction if students make themselves useful to supervisors.

Don't forget - if your preferred speciality is not listed, give us a call as we can usually accommodate most requests. You could also think about other opportunities to make more of your elective:

Split placements - If you are in Tanzania for more than three weeks, it's a brilliant place to do a split placement. We will give you time in both the regional or district hospital, or the private clinics, or if you wish to travel further afield, arrange half your placement at our Dar es Salaam or Arusha programmes.

Village healthcare experience - To complement your city placement, we offer a fantastic opportunity to travel to a Sukuma tribe village where you will spend a week working in a small hospital and living in basic accommodation with a local family. Although we cannot guarantee any deliveries, you will learn about delivering general primary healthcare and may have opportunity to talk with patients about family planning. Spending afternoons with a guide learning about the Sukuma is a unique cultural experience. Read more on our Sukuma Village Healthcare experience page.
