Nursing elective placements in Mwanza, Tanzania

Mwanza has the second largest tertiary referral hospital outside of Dar, so people travel here from all around the surrounding region. The nurses role in Tanzania includes more menial tasks so students must be prepared to pitch in, but there is opportunity to be quite specific about your interests.

Government tertiary referral hospital - Our placements are based in the second largest tertiary referral hospital in the country, offering big, busy wards with excellent supervisors. There is the chance to get involved in more advanced treatment within General Medicine, Surgery, Orthopaedics, Intensive Care, Obstetrics, Paediatrics, Casualty, Infectious Diseases and Outpatients. Students with prior experience in HIV counselling will also be able to get involved in outpatients clinics.

Government regional hospital - Government hospitals are more representative of the type of healthcare most Tanzanians have access too. Although similar placements are offered, facilities are likely to be more basic that at the referral hospital and there is scope to get involved in a wider range of areas.

Don't forget - if your preferred speciality is not listed, give us a call as we can usually accommodate most requests. You could also think about other opportunities to make more of your elective:

Split placements - If you are in Tanzania for more than three weeks, it's a brilliant place to do a split placement. We will give you time in both the regional or district hospital, or in the private clinic. For those that wish to travel further afield, we can arrange half your placement at our Dar es Salaam or Arusha programmes.

Village healthcare experience - To complement your city placement, we offer a fantastic opportunity to travel to a Sukuma tribe village where you will spend a week working in a small hospital. Living in basic accommodation with a local family and spending afternoons with a guide learning about the Sukuma is a unique cultural experience.
