Physiotherapy elective placements in Mwanza, Tanzania
Mwanza has the second largest tertiary referral hospital in the country, so people are referred here from all around the Northern regions. The role of a physiotherapist includes reading x-rays and setting casts, so there is a lot to learn.
Government tertiary referral hospital - - We work with the second largest tertiary referral hospital in the country, offering a busy physiotherapy department with excellent supervisors and some of the best equipment available in Government hospitals. For those keen to learn there are lots of opportunities to work on more specialist referral cases including trauma, stroke, paediatric burns and fracture management.
Private clinic - This is largely for middle-income families. Most are fairly small and specialise in certain areas, giving students the opportunity to focus on a particular interest and get involved in the whole patient journey. Working in a smaller team can also help you get more hands on experience.
Don't forget - if your preferred speciality is not listed, give us a call as we can usually accommodate most requests. You could also think about other opportunities to make more of your elective:
Split placements - If you are in Tanzania for more than three weeks, it's a brilliant place to do a split placement. We will give you time in both the regional or private hospital or, if you wish to travel further afield, we can also arrange half your placement at our Dar es Salaam or Arusha programmes.
Village healthcare experience - To complement your city placement, we offer a fantastic opportunity to travel to a Sukuma tribe village where you will live in basic accommodation with a local family. For students that can work without a specialist supervisor, there is scope to get involved in treatment at a local hospital as well as spend time with a guide learning how the Sukuma live.
