Medical elective placements in Sri Lanka, South Asia

Kandy is the main centre for medicine in the region. People are referred for treatment from all around the surrounding area.

Government hospital - From our base in Kandy we work with two of the large referral teaching hospitals in the hill country. Wards are huge and there are excellent opportunities to specialise in General Medicine, Surgery, Obstetrics, Gynaecology, Paediatrics, Orthopaedics, Psychiatry, Cardiology, Oncology, Neurosurgery, Emergency and trauma as well as transplantation - the hospital specialises in kidney transplants, performing 80% of all cases in Sri Lanka.

Don't forget - if your preferred speciality is not listed, give us a call as we can usually accommodate most requests. You could also think about other opportunities to make more of your elective:

Ayurvedic medicine - Holistic treatment is integral to Sri Lankan healthcare and many people shun modern medicine in favour of traditional care. To complement your hospital placement we run a week -long Ayurvedic medicine course that gives you the opportunity to both learn, practice and receive treatment whilst living with a local family.
