Kandy is the main centre for physiotherapy in the region. People are referred for treatment from all around the surrounding area.
Government hospital From our base in Kandy we work with the second largest general hospital in Sri Lanka, offering a good-sized physio department. The work covered is wide ranging, with placements in Outpatients, Neurosurgical wards, Paediatrics and cardiothoracics. There is also the chance to work in the Surgical Intensive Care Unit, where there is scope to get involved in post-operative care as well as work with stroke patients and amputees.
Don't forget - if your preferred speciality is not listed, give us a call as we can usually accommodate most requests. You could also think about other opportunities to make more of your elective:
Ayurvedic medicine - Holistic treatment is integral to Sri Lankan healthcare and many people shun modern medicine in favour of traditional care. To complement your hospital placement we run a week long Ayurvedic medicine course that gives you the opportunity to both learn, practice and receive treatment whilst living with a local family. This is particularly good for physiotherapists as the hospital specialises in orthopaedics. Read more on our Ayurvedic Medicine experience page.
