Work experience and professional placements
Our placements are not just for elective students. Gaining experience during the summer holidays of your undergraduate years at university, or working as a professional overseas is a fantastic opportunity to learn more about the delivery of healthcare in developing countries. For these non-elective placements, our overseas teams will work closely with our current portfolio of partner hospitals to design a placement specifically tailored to your level of experience. As with all placements we arrange the following:
- A guaranteed clinical placement, organised by our professional staff in your chosen country
- Freedom to choose your preferred specialities, arrival and departure dates
- Placement supervision throughout your time at the hospital
- Extensive pre-departure support from your dedicated project manager, with advice on visa’s, support letters and general preparation
- Meals and secure, comfortable accommodation in a large Work the World house.
- In country support from our well-trained, local staff
- No hassle – we cut through all the red tape so that you can arrive and get stuck straight in.
My placement
Our most popular placements are in paediatrics, obstetrics / gynaecology, A&E and general medicine, but we can also arrange more specialist fields such as plastic surgery, psychiatry, oncology and neurology. Undergraduate students will receive an adapted placement to accommodate their earlier stage of training whilst professionals will undertake a placement giving the best experience in an environment where skills are desperately needed.
If you are overseas for more than four weeks, we can also split your placement across hospitals or arrange for you to join one of our village healthcare experiences (Africa and Asial only) to give you a broader view of healthcare in your chosen country.
Read more about potential clinical specialities for each destination through the links on the side menu and don’t forget – if yours is not listed then call us. We can usually arrange something suitable.
Pre-university placements
Work the World programmes are designed especially for students on clinical healthcare courses and qualified professionals. We also have a sister company called Gap Medics specifically to provide internships for pre-med and other pre-healthcare students. Both companies are run by the same management team, but separating the brands allows us to offer a really specialist service with placements and supervision tailored to the appropriate level.
Just like Work the World, Gap Medics offers internships and volunteer placements that allow you to shadow doctors and other healthcare professionals in a hospital environment. In addition, Gap Medics provides clinical teaching sessions to help you understand and interpret what you see on the wards and in surgery. Accommodation is provided in our own secure Gap Medics houses, where you’ll be living together with like-minded pre-healthcare students from around the world.
