Nursing Placements in Argentina
Public healthcare - Mendoza's public hospital looks after a huge cross section of society, particularly those with no state or private insurance, and is consequently very busy. Students must have intermediate Spanish and will need to be proactive to build relationships with supervisors. For those that do there is scope to work in infectious disease, dermatology, immunisations, obstetrics, gynaecology, paediatrics, oncology, mental health, anaesthetics, general medicine, critical care and emergency.
Union funded healthcare - Argentinians who work for the state have access to healthcare facilities administered by their trade union. Although there are similar cases to the public hospital, treatment and care is of a higher standard and wards are not as busy. There is also a centre in Mendoza that specialises in womens care, so nurses with good Spanish that are interested in neo-natal intensive care, ante and postnatal care as well as deliveries will find this a fascinating placement.
Private healthcare - Many Argentinians are wealthy and hi-tech specialist care is available to those who can afford it. These clinics and hospitals are far more westernised in their approach and standard of treatment, specialising in areas such as cardiology.

Split placements - If you have four weeks or more it is worth thinking about splitting an elective in Argentina. The government and union funded clinics will show you two different levels of care and allow you to specialise in one area as well as looking at how Argentinean healthcare is delivered to the general population.
