Wards are huge and there are excellent opportunities to specialise in general medicine, obstetrics, gynaecology, paediatrics, orthopaedics, psychiatry, cardiology, oncology and plastic surgery. For students keen to get involved there is also opportunity to focus on general, paediatric and neurosurgery, emergency and trauma as well as transplantation - the hospital specialises in kidney transplants, performing 80% of all cases in Sri Lanka.
Split placements - If you have four weeks or more it is definitely worthwhile thinking about splitting an elective, spending part of your time at our programme in India where we have several charity-funded clinics and private hospitals that will give you a far broader idea of the range of care available. The government and private clinics will show you two very different levels of care and allow you to specialise in one area as well as looking at how Sri Lankan healthcare is delivered to the general population.
