Where will my healthcare elective be?

“Through working in this environment, personally I have realized that helping others through physiotherapy is most definitely the profession for me. I took so much from this experience and will always treasure the time I spent out in Zanzibar.”
Jonathan (physiotherapy elective)

Mnazi Mmoja hospital, Stone Town, caters to around a million people and offers you a fantastic opportunity to use your elective and get involved in a wide variety of departments. Our fantastic new village healthcare experience - a chance for you to travel to the north of the island and experience traditional life and the delivery of primary healthcare.

We know how daunting it can be taking your elective or just gaining work experience in an overseas hospital so Work the World have developed a strong relationship with both government and private centres throughout the island. We'll provide you with a structured placement in an area that interests you, as well as providing the support you need throughout your experience.

Where will I live?

“It was the best summer I've ever had and I just wish I had appreciated it more when I was there, as it's easy to get used to how friendly Tanzanians are and how close a community the WTW house can be”
Kaanthan (medical elective)

Our Work the World house is across the bay from Stone Town, a quick dala-dala ride from your hospital placement. It's spacious, very safe and can comfortably accommodate up to 26 healthcare elective students in its six en-suite rooms. There's a huge living room and three rooftop terrace areas to relax and brush up on your Swahili, but perhaps the best bit... it's less than a minute away from the stunning white sands of Mbweni Beach. A true island paradise!

All meals are included during your placement and Rehema, our Caterer, cooks up traditional Swahili and Arabic cuisine as well as western favourites with a Tanzanian twist—her seafood barbecues are the stuff of legends! Rehema, along with housekeeper Rashid, live in a bungalow in the grounds of the house and will make you feel part of the family from the minute you arrive.

What can I do in my free time?

“I learnt how to scuba dive, shopped to my heart's content in Stone Town, danced all night at the full moon party, discovered the spice plantations, learnt about the history of the island... and developed a fantastic tan!
Karina (medical elective)

There are plenty of opportunities to explore the island outside of your placement, enjoy the white sand beaches, swim amongst the marine life, wander around the craft stores or chill out in one of Stone Town's bars.

On weekends you can go a little further afield and catch a short flight to the mainland where you can make the most of the Northern Safari Circuit or climb Kilimanjaro, Africa's highest peak.
