Other costs

The price of our package includes the organisation of your placement, accommodation, food and full support in the UK and overseas (see our package for details). Below is a list of other costs that you should consider when budgeting for your elective:

Flights

With competition in the travel industry so high, there is always the opportunity to get special deals on flights, or even round the world tickets, at incredibly low cost. We have taken the price of flights out of the programme cost, so you can choose whichever option you personally prefer. If you would like advice on recommended agents, please contact us.

Visas

For many of our destinations you will need to buy a visa. Embassies and High Commissions regularly change application rules and charges, so it is often easier and more cost-effective for you to apply directly. To simplify the process, we provide the most up to date information on country requirements for elective or placement participants, as well as comprehensive advice on applying for your visa (where applicable). This will include information on current charges, which you will need to pay as part of your application. It is your responsibility to meet those costs.

Travel insurance

As many students decide to travel before or after their placement and have travel insurance in place already, we have taken this cost out of the placement price. If you wish, we can put you in contact with our insurance brokers, who offer high levels of cover at competitive rates. Please note that it is a condition of participating in our programme that you take out adequate insurance cover.

It is also mandatory that students on clinical electives have indemnity protection. Many will have free coverage through their university course or as members of a professional body. Work the World recommend the Medical Protection Society (MPS) and the Medical Indemnity Protection Society (MIPS). Please click here for more information and links to their sites.

Travel to work

We try to locate our houses as close as possible to the majority of placements and in many cases it is possible to walk to work each day. In some cases, you may need, or prefer, to take a bus or local taxi to work. The cost of commuting is usually less than £1 a day, but you are responsible for this cost.

Socialising and travelling

The programme fee does not cover spending money for socialising or travelling in your free time. Food and accommodation are available for you for the duration of your placement at your project base but if, for example, you travel at the weekends you will be responsible for any meals or hotel costs.
