Medical, Ghana Takoradi

The whole experience of travelling to Ghana, immersing myself in the culture and witnessing Ghanaian healthcare has been both challenging yet amazing at the same time.

Before travelling to Ghana and the Work the World house, I was quite apprehensive, however the staff and other students were so welcoming that the nerves soon disappeared and I quickly felt as though I had been in the house for weeks.

Placement in Ghana provided opportunities that were not easily available in the UK. By being proactive and enthusiastic, I was able to witness and experience a range of healthcare practices and procedures. It was so helpful to discuss and reflect on experiences from placement with fellow students over dinner each night, and everyone was incredibly supportive.

Weekends provided a chance to really get to know each other, as well as experiencing the sights, smells and tastes of Ghana. After a trip to Kakum National Park and spending a night sleeping under the stars, it was clear these were friends I would never forget.

Overall, these past two weeks have been amazing. Despite my initial anxieties, I am proud to say that I have achieved something that very few individuals get to achieve. It has been such a valuable and life changing experience, and I only hope it continues to shape students like me in years to come.
