A learning disability elective abroad puts you right there in the action.

Imagine yourself in a hospital in the developing world learning how local nurses care for patients with learning disabilities. Learning disabilities have only recently come into focus in many countries. So it's no surprise that you’ll see real and confronting issues right at the source.

You'll see some issues stemming from a lack of resources — low staff to patient ratios, limited specialised training, a lack of equipment... But you will see other issues, like prejudices and misconceptions surrounding mental learning disabilities, stemming from cultural and religious beliefs.

Fanthome-Hodgson, Florence"It was all so different to the UK..."

"Experiencing the education system in a developing country can be confronting. Rather than focusing on academic values and curriculae, the school takes a life skills based approach teaching the students vocational trades that they can use into adulthood.

Despite having very limited resources, the students approached their education with an infectious joy.

When I got to the school each morning, I was met by a crowd of excited, smiley students, anxious to welcome me back."

— Florence Fanthome-Hodgson, nursing student from Birmingham City University

Hansen Brevetti John"IT WAS MY TIME WITH WORK THE WORLD THAT GOT ME THIS JOB, IT TOTALLY PREPARED ME FOR IT!"

"A Work the World placement stands out on your CV as a badge of durability, resourcefulness, and cross-cultural aptitude.

During the interview for my current position, I felt as if I started every sentence with 'When I was a student nurse in Tanzania…'. It got me the job.

It’s the best investment you'll ever make in developing your skills, your career, and yourself.”

— John Hansen-Brevetti, former nursing student at Queen Margaret University
