Staying in hostels and homestays are reasonable options if you’re roughing it around the world on a shoestring budget.
But if you’re going overseas to gain hospital experience in a sometimes-challenging clinical environment, you need a comfortable space in which to decompress after placement.

The Work the World houses are huge, spanning multiple floors. The bedrooms are spacious, as are the bathrooms, social areas, lounges, dining rooms, gardens, roof terraces… Some even have pools.
And each house has its own unique charm inspired by local culture.
Your Work the World team
Every Work the World house comes with a Work the World team.
These teams are at the centre of your experience in that they are your in-country support. That includes everything from arranging your clinical placement with local hospitals, to cooking your food.
The Management Team runs the show.
This two-person team is there to make sure you get the most from your experience both in the house and in the hospital. You’ll have plenty of everyday interaction with both members of the team as they spend much of their time in the house itself.
Each property also has a catering team, a housekeeper and a security team.
The catering team will prepare your meals and offer weekly cooking lessons, but more on them below.
The housekeepers are fastidious, and meticulous in their upkeep of the house. In light of COVID-19, our housekeepers, catering teams and the rest of the staff are being briefed on new, more specific cleaning and hygiene protocols to minimise the associated risks. You’ll appreciate that it’s impossible to make any guarantees, just like at home. But we are doing everything in our power to keep you safe.
And regarding the security staff, it’s important to note that we don’t employ them because they’re necessary. We employ them because it offers you additional peace of mind.
We’re glad to say that all our staff are hired locally, which has lots of benefits — tapping into the team’s specialist local knowledge for example.
So, from guiding you to the best local bars to explaining local culture and customs, the team has got you covered.
Location, location, location
Our team is obsessive when it comes to choosing the location of each Work the World house. And with good reason — we want you to feel confident enough to adopt the neighbourhood as your own.
Every neighbourhood we have a house in has its own unique character. But it still has to meet our strict guidelines. We make sure things like local amenities city centres are easily accessible, and that transport to your placement hospital is quick and easy.
You’ll also benefit from the special arrangements we often have with local taxi companies to make sure you don’t end up paying the ‘tourist’ price.
Most importantly, all our houses are in safe locations. Our Head Office team does extensive research on the ground to make sure of this, and all our in-country teams are hired locally for extra insider information.
For additional peace of mind, the houses are for you and your fellow housemates only. No one else is allowed onto the house unless they’re on a Work the World placement or a member of the in-country team.

Living in a house with other healthcare students and graduates is an inherently social experience. You’ll meet people from a huge range of disciplines — medicine, nursing, midwifery, physiotherapy, OT, dentistry, radiography and radiology, pharmacy… The list goes on.
The benefit to you in living with such a diversity of people is a new understanding of the people behind the discipline.
While you’re introducing yourself to your new housemates, you might learn that some have already been in the country for a few weeks. That’s a comforting fact because they can help show you the ropes from the perspective of someone who has already experienced what you are about to experience.
It’s not a stretch to say that you’ll make lifelong friendships while you’re in the house. You’ll travel to placement together during the day, party together at night, and go on once-in-a-lifetime trips across the country together at weekends. Living closely with people through such a life-changing experience helps form strong bonds of camaraderie.
On the point of travel, in the house you’ll find a book full of travel tips from the insiders — previous students who’ve stayed in the house. The idea is that when students find something fun or interesting to do that’s not necessarily in the guidebooks, they’ll write it in down here.
The book contains all kinds of messages and advice to current and future travellers who stay in the house. When you come to the end of your own trip, you can add what you’ve learned.
We’ve spoken a lot about socialising, but everyone needs a bit of downtime to decompress. The houses are huge and spacious, so there’s always a quiet spot for you to chill out and read a book or get on with some work if you need to.

A lot of the girls in the house were on midwifery or nursing Internships. There were also physio students, all doing international placements. What About Food?

Work the World houses are fully catered. Our in-house catering teams are fantastically good at what they do and will cook plenty of local dishes for you to try as well as home comforts from time to time.
If you have any dietary requirements or food intolerances, let us know and your catering team will whip up something equally delicious just for you.
You’ll also get the chance to spend time with your chef learning how to cook local dishes. This is a hands-on, step-by-step lesson once a week. The Work the World chefs are protective over their recipes, so if you take it home with you, to keep it secret.
BBQ night is a highlight each week. It’s a chance for you and your housemates to come together over a few drinks and the best BBQ you’ve ever eaten. Some of our destinations even have a bit of cultural entertainment during BBQ night, like traditional dancing in Tanzania, and karaoke in the Philippines.
So, there’s a small slice of what you can expect while living in a Work the World house. But the only way you’ll truly understand how big of a role it plays in the experience is to go and see it for yourself.
