Midwifery Placements in Dar Es Salaam Zanzibar
Government tertiary referral hospital - Our placements are based in the largest tertiary referral and teaching hospital in the country, with a busy maternity unit. Patients are referred here from all over the region for treatment not readily available at regional or district level, and whilst placements will still cover conventional deliveries and obstetrics and gynaecology wards, there is also scope to get more involved in neo-natal and the I.C.U.
Government district hospital - The smaller district hospitals offer a more basic version of the care available in the referral hospital, but you will be no less busy. Well known for its maternity wards, they have an average of over 80 deliveries per day and students may find that working in a less formal environment makes it easier to develop relationships with your supervisors and get more hands-on experience in a range of treatment and care.
Primary Healthcare Centre - Run by the council, this centre is smaller in size and more basic than Dar's hospitals. It caters to low income people from the city and is well known for it's work in reproduction and children's health. Student's may find it easier to learn in this more personal, clinic-based environment.
Don't forget - if your preferred speciality is not listed, give us a call as we can usually accommodate most requests.
Split placements - If you are in Tanzania for more than four weeks, it's a brilliant place to do a split placement. We can arrange for you to spend part of your time at the tertiary referral hospital as well as incorporate time at a regional or district hospital based at the Arusha or Lake Victoria programme. A split placement will give you a much better picture of Tanzanian healthcare and introduce you to people from all walks of life.
Village healthcare experience - Zanzibar has a few smaller hospitals dotted around the island. To complement your city placement, we offer a fantastic opportunity to travel to a rural village where you will spend a week working in a cottage hospital that caters to the local community. Living with a local family in basic accommodation and spending afternoons with a guide learning about rural Zanzibarian culture, visiting sacred sites and getting involved in fishing and weaving, is a unique cultural experience.
