Ronak Hemmady

I’m a 5th-year medical student from the University of Sheffield. I spent three weeks in the Philippines for my medical elective. 

I always knew I wanted to go overseas for my elective, and I was keen to visit somewhere I’d never been to before, get out of my comfort zone, and gain exposure to conditions I would not see at home. 

I spent one week in Paediatrics, one week in Cardiology and one week on the Village Healthcare Experience. 

I was well prepared to see the contrast in the hospital I was placed in compared to what I am used to. The conditions, the patient volumes, and the lack of funding were very different. It was fascinating to observe the contrast. 

The staff were very welcoming and keen to get students involved.

In paediatrics, I observed so many cases of congenital heart disease, birth defects, baby cannulations, and a PDA cannulation. It was fascinating. I witnessed a huge Hydrocephalus in a very young child. 

Under supervision, I did a subcutaneous injection. I assisted in CPR on a patient after a major road accident accident. 

I spent one weekend in Cebu and another weekend in Gigantes. Both were incredible. The Philippines is a fantastic country. There is so much to see and do — the people and the country are amazing.
