I was inspired to undertake an overseas elective placement in the Philippines because I wanted to experience a different healthcare system, broaden my clinical knowledge, and develop both personally and professionally.

I was particularly interested in learning how nursing care is delivered in a resource-limited setting and how healthcare professionals adapt to challenges while continuing to provide compassionate care. I also wanted to better understand Filipino culture, values, and approaches to patient care.

My goal was to improve my clinical skills, build confidence, become more adaptable, and experience working across a range of specialities, including emergency, obstetrics and gynaecology, paediatrics, and surgery.

My first impression of the hospital was that it was extremely busy, with a high volume of patients and healthcare professionals working under significant pressure. Compared with hospitals in the UK, there appeared to be fewer resources and equipment available, which meant staff had to be resourceful and make the best use of what they had.

Despite these challenges, I was impressed by the dedication, resilience, and teamwork demonstrated by the nurses and doctors. Everyone was very welcoming, and I quickly realised that patient care relied heavily on effective communication, teamwork, and clinical judgement.

Witnessing how healthcare professionals maintained a positive attitude despite limited resources made me appreciate the importance of adaptability and resilience in nursing.

My placement allowed me to develop a wide range of clinical knowledge and practical skills across several departments.

In the emergency department, I observed the rapid assessment and management of acutely unwell patients, which improved my understanding of prioritisation and emergency care.

During my time in obstetrics and gynaecology, I observed antenatal care, labour, and postnatal care, gaining insight into caring for mothers and newborns.

In paediatrics, I learned how nurses adapt communication and care to meet the needs of children and their families.

In surgery, I observed pre-operative and post-operative care, aseptic techniques, and the importance of multidisciplinary teamwork.

The placement also helped me become more resourceful. Staff frequently worked with limited equipment and supplies, requiring them to think creatively while maintaining safe patient care. This experience improved my problem-solving skills, adaptability, confidence, and appreciation of providing high-quality nursing care in challenging environments. I also developed stronger communication skills by working with patients and healthcare professionals from a different cultural background.

One of the most memorable aspects of my placement was observing the wide variety of cases across different clinical areas. In the emergency department, I witnessed the rapid management of trauma patients and medical emergencies, highlighting the importance of teamwork and quick decision-making.

Additionally, during my village experience, I was given the opportunity to scrub in on an operation that involved placing a metal plate on a femur. These experiences reinforced the importance of compassionate, patient-centred care and demonstrated how nurses play a vital role throughout a patient's healthcare journey.

The local hospital staff taught me the importance of resilience, adaptability, and teamwork. They demonstrated how high-quality patient care can still be delivered despite limited resources by prioritising patient needs and working collaboratively. They were welcoming, supportive, and always willing to explain local practices, helping me understand how cultural beliefs, available resources, and the healthcare system influence clinical decision-making.

They encouraged me to ask questions, participate in patient care where appropriate, and reflect on my experiences. Their guidance increased my confidence and helped me appreciate different approaches to nursing while reinforcing that compassion and professionalism are universal qualities regardless of where you work.

One of the biggest differences I noticed between healthcare in the Philippines and the UK was the availability of resources. The hospital often had fewer medical supplies, equipment, and staffing compared with what I am used to in the NHS. This meant healthcare professionals had to be highly adaptable and resourceful while continuing to provide safe and effective care.

I also noticed differences in family involvement. In the Philippines, family members often played a much larger role in supporting patients during their hospital stay, assisting with basic care and providing emotional support. This demonstrated the importance of family-centred care and the strong cultural value placed on supporting relatives during illness.

Despite these differences, the commitment of healthcare professionals to delivering compassionate care was the same. The experience helped me appreciate the strengths of both healthcare systems and reminded me that excellent nursing depends not only on resources but also on compassion, teamwork, communication, and clinical knowledge.

Outside of placement, my housemates and I made the most of our time in the Philippines by exploring the local area, trying traditional Filipino food, and experiencing the country's culture. During evenings, we often reflected on our placement experiences, shared what we had learned, and supported one another. At weekends, we travelled to nearby attractions, visited beautiful beaches and islands, explored local markets, and experienced the warm hospitality of the Filipino people. These trips allowed us to relax after placement while creating unforgettable memories and developing lifelong friendships. Experiencing the country's natural beauty and rich culture was one of the highlights of the elective.

I would strongly encourage other students to undertake an overseas placement. It is an invaluable and once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to develop clinically, professionally, and personally while experiencing a different healthcare system and culture.

You gain confidence, improve your communication and adaptability, and learn to appreciate different approaches to patient care. It also allows you to step outside your comfort zone, build lifelong friendships, and create unforgettable memories.

Although it can be challenging at times, the experience is incredibly rewarding and has strengthened my passion for nursing and my confidence in caring for patients from diverse backgrounds.

My elective placement in the Philippines was one of the most rewarding experiences of my nursing education.

It challenged me to think differently, adapt to new situations, and appreciate the resilience of healthcare professionals working in resource-limited environments. I returned home with greater confidence, improved clinical knowledge, a deeper appreciation of cultural diversity, and memories that will stay with me throughout my nursing career.
