Nursing, Tanzania Dar es Salaam

I saw Work the World online and what it could offer, being a mix of the ability to travel and explore while observing and experiencing healthcare as a nursing student in countries such as Tanzania. I also got to see how other nursing students had used Work the World before, and they had good reviews. After lots of research, I felt the most confident going with Work the World.

During my placement, I learnt about the different types of chemotherapy plans and medications used within paediatric oncology. I also saw many children with large Beckett's tumours, receiving chemotherapy and treatment.

I observed many babies born with HIV due to it being maternally unmanaged. I also observed what additional health complexities were common, such as tumour lysis syndrome, diabetes, hypertension from certain oncology medications and cannula extravasation.

I learned from the hospital staff that their hours were often very long and for multiple days at a time, but they saw working in the hospital specifically as a privilege and the best of the best, as well as a life-supporting means. They taught me how intrathecal chemotherapy is given. I was also told about the charity and non-profit organisations, like Make-A-Wish, that are being introduced to those children suffering from cancer.

In the 2 weeks I had, I managed to squeeze in lots with my housemates and roommates outside of placement, during the evenings and weekends. We went on a 2-day safari in the Mikumi National Park, which was amazing! A day trip to Mbudya Island and even spent two days in Zanzibar doing water excursions, such as swimming with wild dolphins, starfish spotting and snorkelling. In the week, we played padel, went on runs and went to cafes and markets. We fit so much into such a short time!

To others considering undertaking an overseas placement, it can feel like a big jump and commitment, but it’s so worth it. Work the World organises so much and stays in constant communication, it’s a worthy safety net for solo and further afield travelling. It’s definitely worth the whole package; I’ve made once-in-a-lifetime memories.
